Ristorante Kritizia

An Italian restaurant headed by the owner-chef Graziano Cattaneo, who serves genuine Italian cuisine in a rustic-elegant family atmosphere. A main courses of spinach and ricotta ravioli, home made cannelloni and risotto of langoustines are all a cut above the norm, finishing off with equally impressive caramelized fruit pancakes and a chocolate torte. A warm, cosy restaurant which is conveniently located behind the Opera House close to Andrassy Ut.

Bock Bistro

A truly interesting idea much better executed than might be expected, this is the first mid-to-high-end eatery to be formally linked to one of Hungary's leading winemakers, in this case József Bock, who makes excellent reds in the sun-baked southern town of Villány. The food, service, and value are simply amazing. The offerings are both local and, to a lesser extent, international, and we haven't yet heard a bad word about either. Meanwhile, the restaurant also serves as a retail outlet for Bock wines, and other related goodies. All in all, a must-visit for anyone interested in wine and good, hearty food.

The choice and quality of the food here is excellent. The staff are efficient and very friendly, but it is hidden behind some large boards which are there to obscure the construction work.

Kehli

This a gem of a restaurant, with various dining rooms and an outdoor terrace. An excellent traditional gypsy band plays in one of the rooms, adding to the atmosphere. The food is authentic Hungarian fare, generous portions and very well prepared.

This one of the best of restaurants in Budapest over the bridge to Buda. This is a casual, non formal restaurant serving exceptional food. Suckling pig, veal roast, duck liver pate, marscapone mousse - all wonderful.

Prepare for a warm welcome, to be professionally treated and well fed. The food is very good - not cordon bleu or pretentious trendy stuff - just simple dishes, well presented and enjoyable, with advice from the waiting staff that proved accurate.

Belvárosi Lugas

We are very partial to this mid-market little vendéglő across from St. Stephen's Cathedral in central Pest, although during peak eating hours it's often impossible to get a seat, even one of the restaurant's odd schoolroom like tables that seats two side-by-side. Hungarian standards and quasi-international dishes are all better than decent, and decently priced as well. Outdoor seating during the summer, though note that Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út is not Budapest's most quiet boulevard.

Spinoza

Tucked away on Dob Utca (Drum Street) in the old lanes behind the Great Synagogue. This is set up like an old fashioned neighbourhood cafe, but with bags of charm and style. Small polished wooden tables and chairs are dotted round, and attended to with courtesy and unruffled efficiency.
